Valentine’s Day Series: Online Profile Tips

As a speech therapist, I often work with individuals who struggle with executive function challenges, including difficulty with organization, impulsiveness, and working memory. While these difficulties can affect many aspects of daily life, they can be particularly challenging when it comes to making a good impression and communicating effectively on dating apps and websites.

Here are some tips to help individuals with executive function issues make a positive impact and communicate effectively on dating profiles:

Be mindful of language: Choose words that clearly and concisely convey your thoughts and emotions. Avoid using complex or obscure language, as this can make it difficult for others to understand what you're trying to say.

Organize your profile: Make sure your profile is well-organized and easy to read. Use headings and bullet points to break up long sections and include a clear and concise description of yourself.

Show don't tell: Use photos and videos to show off your personality and interests. This can help others get a better sense of who you are and what you're looking for.

Be yourself: Don't try to be someone you're not. Be authentic and let your true personality shine through. This will help others get a better sense of who you are and increase the likelihood of finding a good match.

Take your time: Don't feel pressured to complete your profile all at once. Take your time and focus on one section at a time. You can always go back and make changes later. Stop and think before clicking the final “post” button.

Get feedback: Take a moment to think about your profile from the perspective of others who don’t really know you.  Ask a trusted friend or family member to read over your profile and give you feedback. They may be able to provide valuable insights and help you improve it in ways you haven’t thought of.

In conclusion, by being mindful of language, organizing your profile, showing rather than telling, being yourself, taking your time, and getting feedback, individuals with executive function issues can make a good impression and communicate effectively on dating profiles. Remember, the key to success is to be confident, authentic, and yourself. Good luck!
