The Power of Pausing [for Yourself]
In our last blog, we focused on the power of pausing for others—creating space for children, clients, and loved ones. We don’t want to discount or forget about the importance of pausing for ourselves. Taking intentional moments for self-care is just as vital.
Why You Should Pause for Yourself
Reclaims Balance: Pausing helps you find equilibrium amidst life’s demands.
Boosts Clarity: It creates space to process thoughts and emotions, leading to better decisions.
Promotes Resilience: Regular pauses reduce stress and build your capacity to handle life’s challenges.
Simple Ways to Pause for Yourself
Start Small: Take a 30-second break to breathe deeply and reset. Plan this during a moment where it is easy for you to stop what you’re doing.
Create Rituals: Set aside moments like a quiet coffee break or evening walk to recharge.
Set Boundaries: Saying no to draining tasks or taking on something extra can free up time for yourself.
How I Pause for Myself
Here are a few ways I personally pause for myself as a busy mom and small business owner:
Early Morning Reset: Before the kids wake up, I (try to) carve out 10 minutes to sit with my coffee or quietly get ready for my day without interruptions. It’s my moment of calm before the hustle begins. Does it work out every day? No! And that’s okay too. This is something I have found helps me set the tone for the day when I can, and if I can’t, well, maybe I work that 10 minutes in somewhere else or hope for a smoother start to the day the next day.
Car Quiet Time: Sometimes, I pause in the car for a few extra minutes after daycare drop-off or before heading into work. I use this time to listen to a favorite song, finish an article I want to read, or simply sit in silence.
Family-Free Evening Moments: Once the kids are in bed, I take a few minutes to journal or read—even if it’s just a couple of pages.
These small but intentional pauses help me recharge and navigate the demands of motherhood and running a business with more focus and resilience. It reminds me that my needs are equally important as all the demands happening around me.
As we settle into mid-January, let winter’s natural stillness inspire you to slow down and reflect. Pausing for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. It makes you a better version of you. These moments nurture your well-being, allowing you to show up fully for others. Embrace the power of pausing for yourself and notice the difference it makes.
