Navigating Goals of All Kinds
Happy New Year! Lot’s of people, including me, spend January reflecting on the previous year and planning for the year ahead. And for many, again including me, that means creating new goals.
As a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) juggling professional demands and parenthood, effective goal setting is important and helpful! Let’s dive in!
1. Selecting Goals:
You might choose to break down your goals into main categories such as: Career/Professional, Family, and Personal. Consider career goals such as completing a specific advanced certification course within the year. For family time, set a goal to establish a dedicated 30-minute evening routine for storytelling or engaging activities. On a personal level, commit to daily mindfulness exercises for self-care.
2. Writing Goals:
In your professional realm, craft goals like incorporating a new evidence-based therapy technique into your sessions monthly. For family, write a goal to plan and execute a monthly family outing or game night. On a personal front, commit to a weekly exercise routine.
3. Incorporate Flexibility:
Recognize the unpredictability of your schedule. Allow flexibility in your goals, adjusting your timeline if work commitments or family responsibilities unexpectedly change or intensify.
4. Leverage Technology:
Utilize apps and online resources for professional development. Incorporate technology in therapy sessions to engage clients. Set reminders for both work-related tasks and family events to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
5. Seek Support and Delegate:
Reach out to colleagues for collaboration on projects or share responsibilities. When working with clients, involve their families in the therapy process, encouraging collaboration in goal-setting and implementation.
6. Celebrate Small Wins:
Acknowledge achievements by recognizing milestones. For your clients, celebrate progress in speech therapy sessions with positive reinforcement. Create a reward systems for your own goals too!
Balancing the roles of an SLP and parent involves setting achievable and specific goals. Whether it's advancing professionally, prioritizing family time, or focusing on personal well-being and nurturing friendships, it’s helpful to plan realistic ways to work your goals into your daily routine. Apply the same principles to your clients in speech therapy, fostering collaborative goal setting and celebrating progress, creating a positive therapeutic journey.
