Embracing Flexibility During the Holidays

The holiday season is a time of warmth, celebration, and togetherness. However, for both children and adults, it can also be a period of upheaval when established routines are disrupted.  These changes in routines can impact our ability to communicate and interact effectively. It's essential to acknowledge the importance of structure and routine in our day-to-day lives while also allowing room for flexibility and grace during the holidays.

Routine Changes and Communication Challenges

For many children and adults, routine changes during the holiday season can be both exciting and daunting. Children, in particular, thrive on predictability and structure, which aids their language development and communication skills.  When these routines are altered, it can lead to communication challenges, including increased frustration, anxiety, and difficulty expressing their needs and feelings.

Similarly, adults can experience disruptions in their daily routines during the holidays, which can affect their ability to communicate and interact effectively. The added stress and pressure of holiday preparations can also impact communication, leading to misunderstandings and tension in interpersonal relationships.

What to do…what to do…

Embrace Variety and Flexibility

It's important to remember that a little variety can be a good thing!  While maintaining a structured routine is essential for language development and communication, the holiday season is an excellent opportunity to introduce variety and spontaneity into our lives.  Embracing change and allowing a bit more flexibility during this time can be beneficial for both children and adults.

As an SLP, I encourage families and individuals to give themselves permission to enjoy the holiday season without rigid adherence to their everyday routines. It's okay to relax, go with the flow, and explore new experiences.  Use this opportunity to exercise some of your skills (communication skills, social skills, EF skills) in new and different ways than usual.  In fact, this willingness to adapt and embrace change can lead to increased adaptability and improved skills in the long run.

Set Guidelines, Not Strict Rules

While structure and routine are crucial for effective communication, it's essential to find a balance. Instead of setting strict rules, consider establishing guidelines that provide a framework for the day. These guidelines can include mealtimes, bedtime routines, and designated quiet time for relaxation or reading. By doing so, you create a sense of predictability during the holiday season without stifling the joy and spontaneity that comes with it.

Keep in mind:

When it comes to communication, be patient with yourself and your loved ones. The holiday season can be a stressful time but remember that a little grace and understanding go a long way.  It's okay to take breaks, communicate openly about your needs, and embrace the unpredictability (and joy) of the season.

The holiday season is a time for celebration, and it's also an opportunity for growth and improved communication. As an SLP, I encourage you to strike a balance between the structure and variety in your daily routines. Allow yourself and your loved ones the freedom to enjoy the holidays with flexibility and grace, knowing that you can always return to your routines when the season is over. By doing so, you create a nurturing environment for communication and interpersonal connections, enriching the joy and meaning of the holiday season.

Happy Holidays! Continue to go outside and enjoy the cool, cold weather!
